Chapter 8

Elizabeth closed her copy of Macbeth and set it down on the bed next to her. She had actually finished reading the play on Monday night, but Mr. Collins was going to discuss the final scenes in class tomorrow, so she had decided to reread the last act.

She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, contemplating the plot of the play and making sure she had it all straight in her head. Elizabeth knew a lot of her classmates despised studying Shakespeare, but she enjoyed it. On her fifteenth birthday her parents had given her a book containing all his plays and sonnets, and she had been an admirer of his work ever since. Her favorite sonnet was number eighteen, which began, "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?"

Elizabeth closed her eyes and started to recite the rest of the poem to herself. Instantly she was reminded of Todd. Not too long ago he had gotten that sonnet printed on a tiny card for her and then made it into a bookmark. Elizabeth hopped off her bed and walked swiftly over to her desk. Sure enough, when she opened the top drawer, she saw the card lying there underneath an assortment of pens and pencils. She fished it out and read the entire sonnet silently. Then she flipped the narrow slip over and read Todd's inscription.
